Contracts

Work should not begin until you have signed a written agreement. Get it all in writing: a timetable that includes approximate start and finish dates, payment schedule, scope of work being done and debri removal/clean-up.

View contract carefully with your contractor and clarify anything you don't understand. Open communication with your contractor from the start will ensure a successful remodeling experience.

Does the Remodeler Have.....

  • A current valid Home Improvement License?
  • Carry all the necessary Insurance?
  • History of successful projects similar to yours?
  • Offer options during the planning stage?
  • How many years in business?
  • Do they have a written warranty/guarantee?

Estimates

Giving precise description of what you may want done to each contractor ensures all estimates cover the same work. Make sure you compare apples to apples to accurately evaluate each estimate. Obtaining three estimates is the best way to gauge cost of your project.

It's wise to check Consumers Affairs office in your county to make sure that the contractor you choose is licensed and to check on their complaint history.

An unlicensed contractor is unlikely to have proper insurance in place and his business practices may be questionable. You may also further protect yourself by checking with your local Better Business Bureau to find any complaints against the contractor.

Ask family, friends and neighbors who have recently had remodeling work done. If choosing a contractor from advertisement, get names of satisfied customers and contact them for information about their experience.
